This page discusses the iFLYTEK brand of E-Ink tablets (e-readers that provide note-taking functionality by writing on the screen with a stylus).
Overview
+ Have developed proprietary software in the areas of transcription, translation, voice recognition, and AI
- Relatively new e-ink tablet brand (unknown quantity)
- Monthly subscription required to access certain features
Although iFlyTek have been in business for over two decades, they are still very a relatively new brand in the e-ink marketplace. This means that there is still a level of uncertainty about their long-term viability.
However, they do have some existing proprietary software solutions in the areas of voice recognition, transcription, translation, and AI that could offer something unique.
iFlyTek* are a relatively new e-ink tablet brand, releasing their first e-ink tablet sometime in 2024.
They are a based in China and were formed in 1999 by a group of University students before floating on the Shenzen Stock Exchange in 2008. So, they are a large and well-established global corporation.
They have a history of providing various IT solutions and software development, but the technologies that are at the core of their business seem to be around voice recognition, transcription, translation and AI.
Although they are not a new company per se, they are fairly new to the e-ink tablet industry, and it sort of makes sense that these core technologies would slot nicely into an e-ink tablet – as well as reading and note-taking, voice notes/transcriptions could be taken whilst in a meeting and the ability to automatically transcribe these into text could be very useful, particularly if translation services are also needed.
So, in summary, iFlyTek appear to be adapting their existing technologies (voice recognition, transcription, translation etc.) for a new device (an e-ink tablet) and new markets.
Ecosystem
By setting up a free iFlyTek account, you can sync your notebooks with their proprietary cloud and view them on other devices via Android/iOS apps. They also have a downloadable screen casting tool for Windows or MacOS. There is no support for syncing notebooks with other third-party cloud drives, although you can export them in HTML, PDF, and Word formats via email (you have to configure the email client first) or via the Internet (using a QR Code).
It is also possible to bind Microsoft OneDrive, for downloading files onto the tablet, but this is currently the only third-party drive that is supported. However, it is an Android tablet, so theoretically you can install apps for an alternative third-party cloud drives (Dropbox, Google Drive etc.)
Overall, whilst there is the flexibility to install third-party apps, the native reading and note-taking are not sophisticated enough to interact with them (for example, you cannot long-press on a file and ‘Share’ it with another app).
Customer Service
I’ve not yet experienced iFyTek’s customer service first hand , but I did try to contact them over six months ago (through various channels) to request details about one of their products and never received a reply. Months later, iFlyTek’s representative contacted me for a totally unrelated reason (asking for a collaboration) and I informed them about my previous difficulty in communicating with them. They apologised and said they would look into it.
